For years, the belief that shared knowledge can be a powerful catalyst for progress has been a driving force in my work.
Whether through volunteer efforts or simply sharing insights, I’ve witnessed firsthand how open access empowers individuals and communities to tackle complex challenges with greater ingenuity and collective strength.
Today, I’m thrilled to announce a significant step in that journey: the release of the CIRCA model under a Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-ND 4.0).
For those unfamiliar, CIRCA (Complexity, Insecurity, Rapid Change, Contradictory Demands, Anxiety) serves as a diagnostic layer, helping organizations and leaders critically assess the turbulent environments they navigate. It’s a framework designed to help us understand where the pressure points are.
Coupled with the empowerment layer of CLEAR (Clarity, Learning, Empathy, Agility, Resilience) – a set of positive attributes acting as a potential antidote to the challenges identified by CIRCA – the combined approach offers a lightweight strategic playbook for not just surviving turbulence, but harnessing it as a catalyst for positive change.
My aim in developing CIRCA and CIRCA CLEAR was to provide a practical and accessible way for leaders to move beyond reactive firefighting and cultivate genuine resilience. But knowledge shouldn’t be confined. It flourishes when it’s shared, discussed, and built upon.
Why Open Access (with No Derivatives) for Leadership Development?
Releasing CIRCA model under the CC BY-ND 4.0 license stems from a deep conviction that:
- Empowerment Through Access: Just as open-source software has revolutionized technology, open access to leadership frameworks can empower individuals and organizations, regardless of their resources, to develop crucial skills.
- Broad Reach and Consistent Application: By making CIRCA freely available under this specific license, I aim to ensure the model is widely accessible while maintaining its integrity and intended application.
- Democratizing Leadership: High-quality leadership development shouldn’t be a privilege. Open access helps level the playing field, making valuable frameworks accessible to non-profits, startups, educational institutions, and individuals who might otherwise be excluded.
- Fostering Dialogue and Learning: The goal isn’t just to disseminate a static model, but to spark a continuous dialogue about leadership in a rapidly changing world, centered around a consistent and attributable framework.
What This Means for You (Under CC BY-ND 4.0):

- Attribution (BY): You must give appropriate credit to the creator when sharing the work.
- NoDerivatives (ND): You cannot share modified versions of the work; it must remain unchanged and in its entirety.

This means you are free to:
- Share: You can copy and redistribute the CIRCA model in any medium or format.

Under the “No Derivatives” (ND) clause, you may not:
- Adapt, transform, or build upon the CIRCA model. This means you cannot create and share modified versions of the model itself.
The intention behind the “No Derivatives” clause is to ensure the integrity and consistent understanding of the core CIRCA framework as it was originally conceived. However, I strongly encourage you to explore the concepts within CIRCA and CLEAR and develop your own unique applications and insights based on them. The goal is to inspire your thinking and practice.
My hope is that by making CIRCA openly accessible under these terms, we can collectively foster a more resilient, adaptable, and human-centered approach to leadership, grounded in a shared understanding of the core framework.
I encourage you to explore CIRCA, utilize it in its original form, and share it widely. Let’s embrace the power of shared knowledge and navigate the turbulence ahead, together.
