Book: “Clearly Agile: A Leadership Guide to Business Agility”

It’s finally happened! My friend and Business Agility Institute (BAI) colleague, Giles Lindsay, has released his agility book. We both co-founded the UK operation of the BAI, and it’s been a remarkable journey.

I had the pleasure of attending the book launch yesterday evening. It was wonderful to meet many like-minded agilists—some familiar faces and others I knew of but had never met in person due to COVID.

And in a splendid location, one of the duplex apartments in St Pancras Chambers, NW1. St Pancras is an icon of London architecture and perhaps the most revered gothic building in the world, designed by George Gilbert Scott and completed in 1873.

It’s a tremendous honor and privilege to contribute to a project so close to my heart and review iterations of the book as its evolved, all for a dear friend and esteemed colleague.

Giles’ ground-breaking book pioneers a crucial space in the realm of Lean, Agile, and related thinking, specifically tailored for leaders seeking to navigate the complexities of Business Agility.

Traditionally Agile has the realm of software development teams, with their managers learning through osmosis. However, the landscape has significantly evolved since my initial foray into lightweight development methods back in 1991. By the time the Agile Manifesto was unveiled, my professional trajectory had already shifted towards disseminating Agile practices across entire organizations, extending well beyond the confines of software teams.

Two decades later there is a stark absence of true guidance for senior-level managers. Giles’ book, crafted from his rich experience as a coach and practitioner, masterfully translates agility principles and thinking into the language of leaders.

This is not just a guide; it’s an essential tool for leaders to infuse agility into their strategies and culture, promoting adaptability, collaboration, and innovation at every level of the organization.
