Got Yourself a Mountain of a Problem

While on my honeymoon in New Zealand last month, I captured this breathtaking view of a perfectly conical volcano on the North Island. It reminded me of a valuable life and work lesson: even the most daunting challenges can be conquered one step at a time.

Mount Taranaki, New Zealand

My photograph is of the snowcapped peak of Mount Taranaki (dubbed Mount Egmont by Captain Cook), the centerpiece of Egmont National Park. Its an andesite cone volcano that last erupted in 1854. Formed over a period of around 130,000 years, this mountain is an almost perfect cone shape – one of the best examples of a cone volcano worldwide.

Mountains, like problems, can feel insurmountable from a distance. But as you focus on each step of the climb, what once seemed impossible becomes achievable. Whether it’s transforming a team, delivering a complex project, or overcoming personal challenges, the approach is the same:

1️⃣ Assess the terrain – Understand the big picture and identify the key obstacles.
2️⃣ Plan your route – Break the journey into smaller, manageable steps.
3️⃣ Take the first step – Progress comes with action, not just intention.

In work and life, progress is often about persistence, adaptation, and celebrating each milestone along the way.

Do you have a “mountain” you’re working to conquer?

How do you break it down into actionable steps? I’d love to hear your thoughts! 🌟
